Sept 24 - Floras Lake

3788km
Langlois, OR, USA - Floras Lake
Sailworks NX 7.8, Goya Bolt 125, MFC KPR-44 Wind: 8G15 knots
Launched about 3:45. Made a couple of runs. With pumping, I can get this kit on a plane in 15 knots of wind but don't have a chance of getting it on a plane in 8 knots. So typically I would slog half way across the lake before getting a decent gust. Spent an hour watching kiters then made a couple more runs about 5 PM.
Probably my last session for this year in Oregon.
Looking forward to getting on the water in Bonaire with my new-to-me 'Taty' gear Laughing.

Good luck in Bonaire Barton, hope you get lots of PBs on your new gear....if not don't bother coming back!Embarassed

I commented:
Thanks Roo. I'll give it a go. From my perspective, Alpha is the one I am most interested in increasing (to me it means I'm a better sailor), followed by km (getting backk in shape). The straight-line speed ones are more mental and condition dependent, and we already know I have a mental issue Laughing.

Roo commented:
You need speed for a good alpha!

I commented:
Understood, but I'll settle (for now) with 30 knots going into an alpha Laughing - understand that (again, for now), a good alpha for me would be low 20's...

I commented:
Roo, just for grins, in order to back up my perception with some data,  I looked at your Aug 5 tracks where you had an alpha of about 22.4 knots. Turns out your run-in was in the mid-28 knot range with a run-out hitting mid-24 knots. Since your entry and exit speeds are speeds that I have a chance of hitting on Bonaire, my goal of a low 20's alpha is a possibility, assuming I can start nailing the laydown jibes.

Good, now I have a 'realistic' goal to work towards Laughing . Thank you for the data!

Roo commented:
Targets should be 28 to 30 knots in, 11 to 13 knot minimum and 24 to 28 knots out. Hit those and you'll be a jibing guRoo! Remember if you don't lay it down you'll look like a clown.Surprised

I commented:
I think I'll make a poster out of your last comments Laughing. I like it, especially the guRoo part!

Roo commented:
Season's not over yet Barton, come on out...air is clear, water is warm and wind is blowing! Anyone would think you are scared of the Gorge chop monster.Embarassed

I commented:
Actually, part of my problem is vision, or more specifically double vision, which has gotten significantly worse in the last 2-3 weeks. When I wake up in the morning I have double vision for about 20 minutes which gradually reduces to a small range of head motion where I can see without double vision. Visited the doctors at OHSU yesterday. Basically, the phasing off of Prednisone to Methotrexate is not working so we are starting over.  The reduction in the dose of Prednisone has allowed the tumor behind the eye (idiopathic orbital inflammation) to increase in size, maybe even worse than when first diagnosed last February. I am starting over with large doses of Prednisone and will be phasing over to a different steroid sparing medication (which, right now, the insurance doesn't want to pay for...). So, am I scared of the Gorge chop? Given that I have difficulty seeing it, yes... Frown. Flat water sailing, like at Floras Lake hasn't been as much of an issue since I can keep my head more stable/level, and I don't have to worry about the chop...

Roo commented:
Sorry to hear mate, no fun getting old and having these problems. Wish you the best with the treatment and hopefully you'll be back up to speed soon.

I commented:
Thanks Roo. Once the Prednisone kicks in, the vision should improve - and then we start the phase out process again. As my mother used to say before she passed, "Getting old isn't for sissies"...

Sept 22 - Floras Lake

3784km
Langlois, OR, USA - Floras Lake
Sailworks NX 7.8, Bolt 125, MFC KPR-44 Wind: 10G18 knots
Launched about 2:30, wind was a little light but made some planing runs then took a break and talked with Will Brady at the Kite/Windsurfing lesson shop. Went back for a few runs about 4:30. Wind was a little stronger and easier to get on a plane but still took about 1/2 the width of the lake to catch a good gust. When up on a plane, the NX 7.8 felt comfortable and controllable. Managed to biff a jibe on the ocean side by not getting the rear foot out of the strap soon enough - fell in, left knee hit the sand and wrenched my left hip - what a klutz... made a couple more runs and called it a day as the wind was starting to fade anyway.

On the positive side, getting into the rear foot straps with one quick jam of the foot is still working as per a month ago. Got a couple of comfortable, quick-for-the-wind-conditions runs, which felt good. Tried to hang-out farther (Taty style) which also felt comfortable.

Roo commented:
Good to see you got a session Barton.

I commented:
Thanks Roo.  Nice to back on the water, even if it requires 'pumping practice' to get moving :) .
Looking forward to when I'll be able to sail almost every day rather than once a month...
